We have good things in store, everything old. Did you see how beautiful the horn is? We’ve positioned it as part of a rack. (Sadly today I saw a man in the store give it a ‘museum look’, looking at it, head cocked to one side, wonderingly.) A reaction is better than none.

I’ve put it this way to share with you some interior ideas, for those of you home/room proud, or for those of you not ready to strangle us poacher-alibis… Before you jump, remember: the exotic is only exotic if time has had its way with it. Death is everywhere; rarity is more ugly than beautiful without age. I couldn’t be bothered about keeping a fresh kill for time to do its work — death is not only everywhere, it is anytime. Why kill-and-keep, for later?

This is our understanding, our reasoning.

Stevie General Store now (also) sells nail color. The peel-off kind. In BRIGHT NEON colors. Available nowhere on our ape-alien planet but at 93 Club Street!!! (I mean color your nails so that they can be peeled off.)

There is a garden in my head that I’d like to plant into the store. Because of this I’m awake too early in the morning after only a few hours of sleep. I can hear the birds calling and the sun slowly roasting this Tuesday. When the garden is better transplanted, I’ll post up photos again. I’m wondering if people who walk into Stevie will think ‘what a cluttered little store’.

I feel a little guilty we do not spend as much energy selling our clothing. But I believe (not unshakably) in letting the presence behind ‘design’ tell the story of our clothes. So I’m going to spend today harvesting the viburnum from our neighbor florist on Erskine Road and more and more and more will creep up our walls…

The last good thing to have happened to me in 2009 was becoming the owner of rare milliner’s parts. As old and (some) fragile as they are, color appears almost as rich as the day they were dyed. I had originally wanted to add them in to my personal collection, but the more I look at them, the more urgent I feel their appeal. Perhaps the word is not urgent but lovely. If you are good with your hands or have an imagination as free as a bird, may these become your delightful find.

These hair trinkets are made from floral parts left over from between the 40s and the 50s. Not long ago, the principal of a hat-making school in Philadelphia passed on and they discovered a stunning collection of beautiful floral pieces kept away in the school’s cupboards and drawers, made in Germany from a time long, long ago. Then, not long ago, too, we got a tiny part out of this precious collection and I turned the sad, loose parts into either time-preserved gems or time-ravaged ruins: you decide.

Time sort of stands still when my gaze lands on their rich color and soundless stories.

Our tree made from four hangers, twine and wrapping what seemed to be raspberry plastic fruits!

Honestly, there’s no other way I would be happy with a tree in the store.
