The office system relies on the paper shredder, while the creative system in our friend Mr Tanaka pieces together what he collects to give new life to office literature. Memo pads in various sizes, photo albums, card holders, ball point pens and push pins. All these wonderful things made of what we throw away everyday in the office. A case of ‘the better the thing after it’s thrown’, and the better artful dodger, Mr Tanaka.

Sometimes in the making of Philomel garments we use and use and use. Of this and that, useful and useless, use use use.

So in a sense this is our small gesture in ‘recycling’. Handmade paper stationary products are in store, but they are not just paper. One idea in resource conservation means we begin to think about the mountains of paper we use in our daily lives. ‘New’ stationary is created by reusing old stationary. These marvelous postcards, memo pads, note books, push pins and envelopes are just that, where many of them retain the color and finish of what they were before they were reused.

From the Kansai region comes something made with love and ingenuity. Touting her wares on a bicycle in the quieter streets of suburban Tokyo, she is an artist’s dream come true. Free and joyful because the skies live within her.

These bags are made using the Japanese ‘sailcloth’ commodity, where a part of sales is contributed to the activity that defends the environment of the loquat lake. The artist comes from the Takashima area, an active region of the cotton fiber industry and surrounded by the biggest loquat lake.
